Flooding in Sandakan and BSBCC

Dr Wong Siew Te: "As I am waiting for my next flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan, news pouring in about the heavy rain in Sandakan. BSBCC was also victimized by this storm where one of the trees at the entrance walkway fell because of the heavy rain. Water levels in many parts of Sandakan have risen, including at BSBCC. Luckily so far we only suffered the damage from the fallen tree where the stainless steel handrails need to be replaced. Other places are alright despite the water rises. According to the metrological department, about 300 mm of rain received since last night in the Sandakan area, about 12% of the annual rainfall. Let's pray that the heavy rain will slow down soon and the water level drop to a safe level."

BSBCC 41th Board Meeting

I am grateful to Datuk Frederick Kugan, the Chief Conservator of Forest, Sabah Forestry Department for chairing @bsbcc 41th Board Meeting this morning at Sabah Forestry Department HQ. Attending the meeting via Zoom are Dr Nabilah from Sabah Wildlife Department and Ms Sylvia Yorath from @leapspiral, and BSBCC management team, thank you all for being with us since Day 1 of the this project. Many important agendas have been discussed and new budget for 2025 has been approved! Thank you! We passed the endurance test of 2024 with flying colours! Wish we work hard again this year for more achievements! Remember, i maybe the one who started @bsbcc, but I cannot do all of the works alone. I need you and your helps! Let’s work together! Together we can, together we will and together we must help sun bears and planet Earth!

This visit provided students with valuable insights into wildlife conservation, the significance of protecting endangered species like the sun bear, and an appreciation for Malaysia’s rich biodiversity. Such enriching experiences align with the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, fostering environmental awareness and promoting sustainable tourism.

SK Nunuyan Laut Visit (2025-01-09)

 We welcomed a group of primary school students from SK Nunuyan Laut, Sandakan. The group consist of 17 students and 4 teachers were brought to a guided tour in our Centre. Several important topics where shared such as the reason of the Centre establishment, why the bears are here, why their number in the wild declined and what we are trying to do to make it better for the bears that we rescued. These topics discussed with the hope of instilling empathy and love to our bears and of course the wildlife in general so there will be a better future for our wildlife and nature.
